Last weekend Edible Skinny was lucky enough to check out the “Stay & Stage” Package at Shore Hotel in Santa Monica, CA in partnership with The Broad Stage. This Package, which welcomes performing arts lovers to Santa Monica is in celebration of The Broad Stage’s 10th season, included a one night stay at Shore Hotel, two tickets to the critically-acclaimed play Small Mouth Sounds at The Broad Stage, a Wine and Cheese plate, and early hotel check-in (when available). The “Stay & Stage” Package is available for stays September 1, 2017 through April 30, 2018.

Shore Hotel is the perfect one two punch of cat-like sleekness meeting sustainability. The family owned boutique hotel opened in October 2011 offering Eco-friendly accommodations with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. It is a LEED Gold (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified property, the only property in the city of Santa Monica with this elite do-gooder status.

The highly-awarded Shore Hotel received two distinct honors in 2105: the prestigious Sustainable Quality Awards (SQA) Grand Prize and the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) Los Angeles Best Green Hotel Award. Guests of Shore Hotel enjoy non-toxic, naturally-daylit and ventilated rooms that feature Eco-friendly furnishings and finishes. Other environmentally friendly initiatives include Shore Hotel's swimming pool being heated by solar energy and water-wise landscaping and water-efficient fixtures reducing potable water by 50%.

The AAA Four Diamond property boasts an open-air, U-shaped design with stainless steel-clad trellis, outdoor “living room,” with pool, water feature, and guest only patio dining. Amenities on property include a fitness center, a business center, a four-level underground parking lot.

Good hotels are the result of a two part action plan: get the basics right and pepper it with some fun details. The basics: anticipate the needs of your guests. Have a spectacular view (check to that... Hello Ocean Avenue!), a lobby the just knows it's cool (check), sleek meets sustainable rooms (check again), and have a decent working gym (a necessary in Los Angles...).

Along with Shore Hotel well known outdoor “living room” which includes a pool and bar, there's also the less known secret garden patio nestled inside which is perfect for sustainable snuggling. Along with the wine and cheese plate included in the “Stay & Stage” Package, I delighted in the complimentary coffee in the lobby that was actually decent (believe me considering the amount of hotels and motels I've stayed at in the last few years, I've become quite the expert on “lobby coffee...”

While working out at that previously mentioned gym, I ran into two different cast members (Brenna Palughi and Edward Chin-Lyn) from Small Mouth Sounds, the show I had experienced the night before at The Broad Stage. Small Mouth Sounds is a sharp look at mindfulness and the wellness industry. On a week-long silent retreat in the woods, six runaways from city life embark on a quest to confront their inner demons. Under the eye of an unseen guru, they learn that silence can indeed be golden. It can also be funny, frustrating, erotic, comforting, and profoundly passive-aggressive as they avoid and embrace the achingly human need to connection. Small Mouth Sounds is a play of awkward silences, sometimes funny, sometimes painful, resulting in a play that's painfully funny.

This national touring Small Mouth Sounds (before The Broad they were in New Haven and San Fran) was a 2016 Critics’ Pick (The New York Times, New York Magazine, Time Out New York). It was written by Drama Desk Award winner Bess Wohl and directed by Obie Award winner Rachel Chavkin. FYI: the production contains male nudity of a non-sexual nature so be prepared to leave the kids at home... Hey, it's class, it's art! ;-)

The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center opened its doors in October 2008. Boasting one of the city's largest proscenium stages, the space is sublimely intimate with just over 500 seats, yet strikingly grand. The Broad Stage offers theatre, dance, film, opera, jazz, world music, musicals, symphony and chamber orchestras, family programming and more.

Hello, and happy health to you all! I was lucky enough to be invited to Bulletproof Labs in Santa Monica, a ‘fitness facility’ dedicated to optimizing physical and cognitive performance through science. After spending four hours there, trying almost everything they had to offer, I realized that calling Bulletproof Labs a fitness facility is like calling Picasso a painter; technically it’s accurate, but really only scratches the surface of the level of artistic precision they are able to deliver to the body.

That precision all starts with comprehensive testing and setting a baseline for where you are when you arrive. From body composition analysis (body fat, intra and extracellular water, and even the amount of skeletal muscle mass), to looking under the hood with a NASA developed gut micro biome test, they can really see what modalities will be the most beneficial to moving the needle when it comes to optimizing your health.

From there, the knowledgeable staff can help custom tailor a program that delivers measurable results. Every piece of exercise equipment there tracks your performance from workout to workout to help show the dramatic progress along the way. After all, progress equals happiness!

The physical training equipment they have there is unlike anything you will ever find in your local gym. One piece of equipment delivers the equivalent results of a three and a half hour high intensity workout in only 21 minutes, and by combining cold and compression, avoids all the muscle soreness. They also had one machine that trains the bones themselves to gain more density to allow for more skeletal muscles to develop, and it was only a 20 second workout!

Charity Cannabis Calendar for Veterans Censored by State

You can't fight City Hall, but one group of Cannabis Pin-Ups is doing just that to help raise money for Veterans suffering from PTSD!

From Betty Grable donning the nose of WW2 fighter plane to Rosie the Riveter arching her back for the cause, throughout history pictures of pretty ladies have help raised money for Active Duty Service Members and Veterans. So with that in mind, in August of 2017, Cannabis photography company Dope Foto and Cannabis entertainment group The Green Light District came together to create the inaugural issue of The Emerald Dames of Sin City, a Las Vegas Charity Pinup Calendar.

“For us, creating the calendar is a way to rally public support for Veterans rights to utilize Cannabis once they’ve returned home from serving our country,” notes producer Julia Reed Nichols, who's company Do Right Industries produced the calendar. “Thus, 10% of the proceeds from The Emerald Dames of Sin City will go to the award-winning Cannabis non-profit Grow For Vets.” Grow for Vets is a tax exempt organization that helps Veterans with PTSD, TBI, chronic pain, and other serious medical conditions obtain and grow Cannabis. In 4 years since forming, the group has served more than 40,000 Veterans and given away $1.5 million in free Cannabis to Veterans in states where medical Marijuana is legal.

A Marijuana user due to epilepsy, the combination of Pin-Ups, Cannabis, and raising money for Veterans was the perfect fit for Nichols. The last of those being something she knows quite a lot about. In the last three years Nichols' entertainment company Pin-Ups on Tour (a division of Do Right Industries) has donated $50,000 in free Veteran tickets and monetary donations to Veteran non-profits such as AmVets, Heels For Combat Boots, Recon Sniper Foundation, Pin-Ups For Vets, American Legion posts, VFW posts, and Grow For Vets. Her Pin-Ups on Tour shows have been performed in 45 states bringing together 9,000 people to support our troops. She has been able to donate over 2,400 tickets to Veterans, and have been able to entertain close to 3,000 Active Duty and Veteran Service Members in our nation's VA Hospitals and Veterans Homes.

The cost of the creation of the project (photography; hiring models, makeup artists, and hairstylists; wardrobe; and printing of the calendar) was offset by potential sponsorship of each page month (and the cover) by a different Marijuana brand. In the end 4 Cannabis brands chose to participate, 3 of which are MMEs (Medical Marijuana Establishments).

Although the calendar itself is a piece of editorial work, sponsorship of a month by an MME was considered advertisement which required the MME submit it to the Department of Taxation, the Marijuana Enforcement Division.

The 6x6 inch calendar was printed in early November and pre-sales commenced. An article was even published in Civilized during Veterans Day week about the work we were doing. All that was left to do was wait for State approval for our 3 MME sponsored pages. But on 11/29, weeks after our MMEs had submitted, 2 out 3 of our MME pictures were rejected by the Department of Taxation.

The two images in questions: January which was an image of a stylish lady in a sequined sparkly gown holding a unlit joint in one raised hand and a jar containing Marijuana flower in the other; and February which was an image of a Pin-Up chef holding a flour dusted wooden spoon close to her happily grinning mouth. According to the State, both indicated “Intent to Consume.”

This rejection this was a surprise to both the producers and sponsors. “As a photographer in the Cannabis industry for 3 years, I am plenty aware of the state regulations in regards to consumption of Cannabis in photographs,” notes calendar photographer and producer Shannon Dorn of Dope Foto. “We made sure all models were in the safe zone at all photo shoots; no one was to consume and no one was to look as though they were consuming.”

But with the potential for the sponsors to be fined $50K or more, The Emerald Dames of Sin City had to figure out a solution. Within 24hrs, we sent our contact at the Department of Taxation, Marijuana Enforcement Division alternative photos from which they could chose a replacement image. Thus, allowing us to sticker over the censored images and release the calendar while still including our sponsors.

The Nevada Marijuana Enforcement Division's decisions on whether advertisements are acceptable are ruled by committee. “Their choices can seem very arbitrary at times,” states Nichols. “It's like that old statement about pornography... I'll know it when I see it.” Recently an advertisement for a Cannabis infused beverage company's Mango flavored product was rejected by the State because it included shots of Mango fruit in the ad. The explanation: Kids like fruit and thus the picture could potentially be advertising to children...

In mid December, two weeks after our MMEs resubmitted their images, our December month MME received an email stating that their January MME picture (the same MME sponsored January and December, just with different specific brands) was rejected because the model was holding an alcoholic beverage. Yet that statement is erroneous as the January model is holding, as previously noted, a jar of flower and not an alcoholic drink.

The Marijuana Enforcement Division also informed this MME that The Emerald Dames of Sin City cover image and our June page were also reasons the calendar could potentially get rejected. Their rational was that the cover image involved consuming vape pens. But although the pen is near our models lips, it is not in fact touching. And as for our June image, the State was inclined to dismiss it because the image showed “the model with what would assumed to be an alcoholic drink. Yes it technically 'could be juice,' etc. but the perception of a martini glass or a glass of anything at what appears to be a party would be alcohol.”

It is illegal for advertising images to include both alcohol and Marijuana in the same shot. Yet our model held in her hands a martini glass full of blue sugar water and nothing more. The glass was chosen to indicate a classy time not alcohol, to indicate sophistication not booze. A glass is just a vessel, technically defined as “a drinking container.” What is inside of it, ice cream, water, or alcohol, defines it's specific use.

But these details are unimportant as the Department of Taxation, Marijuana Enforcement Division does not have a right to regulate these images at all as these pictures were editorial pages from the calendar, not MME advertisements.

All of this red tape is never good for business. “We had numerous pre-orders on this charity calendar from Veterans across the nation wanting to give it as a Christmas gift...,” notes Nichols. “We were sitting on 3,000 calendars that we couldn't legally distribute. Calendars are timely in nature; they usually only sell from a window of November to February. This means to raise the most money possible for Grow For Vets the product needs to be available as soon as possible.” To add to the frustration, this calendar is the fastest selling pinup calendar Do Right Industries has ever produced.

Due to the seasonal nature of calendars and the fiduciary responsibility we have to Grow For Vets, The Emerald Dames of Sin City has decided to sticker over our 3 MME sponsored pages of the calendar (and the back cover with their logos). This will make the calendar fully editorial. “Once our MMEs have heard from the State, we'll be happy to sell the complete calendar,” notes Nichols. “But until then, this was our only course of action without having them receive a hefty fine.”

“On a larger note, we felt we needed to let the world know the state of bureaucracy when it comes to Cannabis advertising policies in the state of Nevada,” continues Nichols. “We set out to make a fun charity calendar to bring the Cannabis Community of Las Vegas together, but the degree of hoops we've had to try and jump through on this experience has reached Kafka-esque levels. This is a Marijuana experience that needs to be more known by people looking to do Cannabis business in Nevada.”

But for right now there's stickering to be done! Because despite a few bureaucratic bumps, there's still 3,000 calendars to be distributed and sold. With The Green Light District negotiating shows for the upcoming months in Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle, The Emerald Dames of Sin City with be hitting the road as merchandise at these events.

For at the end of the day the focus has always been about raising money for a great Cannabis non-profit. “There are Veterans out there who need help, and contributions from this calendar do our part in making this happen,” notes photographer Shannon Dorn. “It's only right that we do what we set out to do: raise funds Grow For Vets so they can help Veterans find a safer and alternative medicine through Cannabis.”

Manahawkin is the hometown of the Thomas Gals (Kat and Kelly Thomas).  While there, a epic snowstorm happened (not a common occurence in South Jersey), so our Editor In Chief Kat Thomas, decided to take The Beebs for some flytime courtesy the vantage point of a certain red costumed white bearded flyboy! ;-)

Just Doobie It... Cannabis Goes Mainstream at The Las Vegas Convention Center with MJ BIZ Con

Welcome to High Standards... With marijuana now legal in 29 states medically, recreationally in 8 states (with California coming on board as of Jan. 1st), the cannabis industry is one of the fastest growing businesses in the history of our modern economy. Weed is now a $7 billion dollar a year industry, in the United States alone.

Every year, new markets open up in the United States and across the world. And with that in mind a few weeks ago Edible Skinny was lucky enough to experience the expansive growth of the cannabis industry at MJ BIZ Con, sponsored by Marijuana Business Daily.

Founded in early 2011, Marijuana Business Daily focuses solely on Cannabusiness and the investors who back them. This industry keeps growing which lead to the natural expansion of the conference this year.

When the conference began in 2012 there were 400 people in attendance. This grew exponentially with 2016 seeing 10,881 visitors. In 2017 this number doubled to 18,500 cannabis business leaders and investors with 38 countries represented.

This year’s MJ BIZ Con saw a venue change from the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino to the Las Vegas Convention Center (where they occupied 300k sq ft of Expo Hall Space). The conference expanded extensively from 9 Tracks to 45 Sessions to 110+ Speakers and 678 Exhibitors. So with all these opportunities Edible Skinny was able to taste the rainbow of cannabis (business) experiences!

Our MJ BIZ Con commenced early with the ladies of The Emerald Dames of Sin City (Shannon Dorn of Dope Foto and Julia Reed Nichols of The Green Light District) at the CLAB Pitchfest Party sponsored by ArcView Group, and Altitude Products. 

Held at Casa de Shenandoah (aka Wayne Newton's house), the event attended by thousands, featured Elvis impersonators, showgirls, and munchies galore with a plethora of food trucks surrounding the building. The ArcView Group raises capital from cannabis industry taste makers and helps find strategic partners to bring cannabusinesses to the next level. With 600 members, ArcView Group have helped fund 150 companies with over $150 million dollars of capital invested. Atltidue Products is the creator of The Weekend Box (as Birchbox for weed), along with having the licensing rights to some of the cannabis industry's most established brands for the state of Nevada.

Flower Power! The next day it was off to the largest cannabis convention in the country. While walking the floor we ran into cannabis media movers and shakers Dr. Lloyd Covens (editor of West420 Newsweekly), Karen Paull and Wendy Robbins of The Marijuana Show (aka the "Shark Tank for Legal Cannabis Businesses), Canna Influencer Alice Moon, and Ashley Manta of CannaSexual.

Let's get medicated! There were plenty of intriguing activations. MJ Freeway Business Solutions was the very first seed-to-sale tracking for the industry starting in 2010. This year MJ Freeway brought an oculus rift virtual experience to MJ BIZ to show how their technology platform can help experiences such as cultivations, laboratories, and dispensaries.

While walking the floor we discovered the world’s first planter with antimicrobial silver created by Miami based The Bucket Company. This nifty planter can be stacked in numerous versions of rows, has attachments for tools for trimming, and comes in a multitude of colors... including pink!

We continued on to sample the fabulous Marley Natural Chapstick. The hemp seed based product also contains coconut and sunflower seed oils as well as cocoa butter and vitamin E. The result was an uber healing experience for desert dry lips that left our smackers feeling soft, healthy, and extremely smooth.

An so the cannabis industry grows... word on the street is that next year's MJ BIZ Con would accommodate up to 40,000 attendees... and with that so does the other green (of more and more zeros).

So in the immortal words of Stewie Griffin, “Everything is better with a bag of weed.” Here's to 2018 being full of green, in a multitude of forms!
